A.B. Bourne’s Bio – an Interview with Edwin Hoff
Q: Tell me something about A.B. Bourne.
Edwin: She’s behind. She should be writing the next book.
Q: So A.B. is a woman?
Edwin: Yes. She graduated from Yale College and the University of Michigan Law School before she joined the high tech start up world and started doing deals for Akamai Technologies among others, and mentoring others at TechStars, Boston. She also writes for the Harvard Business Review. These days, while writing, she consults with tech companies. Next.
Q: What’s her hallmark? Why does a fiction reader choose A.B. Bourne?
Edwin: A.B. writes authentic twists. She uses your time well. The plots move fast and the twists—you don’t see them coming but they will give you a “whhaaa?” thrill. And you read her for me.
Q: You? Why is she writing about you?
Edwin: I remind her of someone she once worked for. A mathematician armed with duct tape and computers. He was an MIT genius, a former Israeli commando and an entrepreneur who fixed the Internet—the entire Internet—and became a billionaire overnight. He died much too young, in a terrible way. A.B. imagined a different story for him. Working for him was like living in a thriller—so she invented the Edwin Hoff Series to help people who never knew the real guy get the feel of that kind of inspiration. I get to live that. I get to fight terror from deep cover, and lead people to become their own heroes.
Q: Wow. Who wins a chess game or a fist fight? Edwin Hoff or Jack Reacher?
Edwin: A fist fight? Neither of us. We’d be on the same team. I’d take him in my squad and I’d fight on his any day. In chess, he’d be toast.
Q: How about Robert Langdon?
A: That guy’s almost as smart as me. But I’d duct tape him in under 15 seconds so that part would be over pretty quick.
Q: Who gets the girl?
Edwin: That’s obstreperous. Langdon.
Q: What’s the Edwin Hoff Series?
Edwin: A.B. imagined a thriller series about the story of our time—a true leader who fights terror and turns normal people into their own kind of heroes.
This new book, Rising Aces, is the entry point, and features a battle royal between me and my nemesis. With the killing of the leader of a global terrorist group, my nemesis is hell bent on becoming the successor, something he’s been promised all his tortured life. But I’m coming for him, and I’m going to get him with all of my skills, billions and technology. A few normal people get in the middle. After I’m done with them, they are braver, tougher, better. They become titans, too.
The prequel was A.B.’s first novel, The First Secret of Edwin Hoff (Watch Hill Books 2011), which tells my story and ignites the rivalry. She’s working on the sequel, which resolves the rivalry.
Q: How does A.B. have time to write?
Q: Last question. What do you think A.B. learned from the real guy, who inspired her to create you?
Edwin: I know exactly. She once told me this: “Before I knew him, I was often fearful. Now I know there is always the choice to be fearless.” That’s why Edwin Hoff matters. True leadership cures fear. People crave it.
